about
Initially, the only thing that really appealed to me about music was writing. That was the entire inspiration for learning to play guitar back when I was 13, and it has been an integral part of my life for the last 20 years.
This song was written shortly after that when I was just 15. Well, the bulk of it anyway. The nice part of having all that additional experience means that when you revisit something with good bones you can really zhuzh it up in a way that feels natural and skillful. I made some lyric tweaks, some melody enhancements, and got my big gun brothers in music to back me up. But the chord progression is exactly the same, as is every part of the chorus. Even the harmony is what I scratched out on my parents' old Fostex recorder back in 2003.
It makes me really proud of that high school kid, making music in Littleton, Colorado just because he loves it. To get to be the recipient of his dedication and devotion is something really special.
Recorded by myself of vocals and guitar at my home, and by Collin Sitgreaves on drums and Brendan O'Donoghue on upright bass at Mighty Fine Studios. Recording engineer for drums and bass was the one and only Collin Bricker. My brother, Parker Murphy, and my spirit brother, Dan Gomby, helped produce the session for maximum taste and efficiency. I mixed and mastered it on a MacBook from 2008.
Thanks for listening, friends.
lyrics
Some would say
It's another day
Hiding behind the moon
But I'm stranded here
In here pale blue stare
And if I could say
Any single thing
I'd promise that I'd love you
And you'd kiss me sweet
In my fading dream
And maybe I should lose the rules I've always held so dear
And maybe I should step to chance and just embrace the fear
And I'm terrified, I've come so close to the edge of me
Maybe you're there, darling
It's only fate
Cruel but safe
A steady and terrible hand
Did you feel it slip
In between our lips
And I fall from you
Gently through the bloom
Of some damned, beautiful gasp
If I have to go
I'm glad I know
And maybe I should lose the rules I've always held so dear
And maybe I should step to chance and just embrace the fear
And I'm terrified, I've come so close to the edge of me
Maybe you're there, darling
